Method and System for Implementing an Abstract Storage that Supports Heterogenous Storage Systems

Disclosed is a method and system for implementing an abstract storage that supports heterogenous storage systems. The system includes an abstract file system that defines storage technologies and configures IO nodes using a REST interface. For operations, the REST interface supports management of accounts/users, clients, object stores and access control lists (ACLs). A client may be registered for operation with the file system on behalf of an account (or user). An input/output (IO) node manages access to specific storage of various storage technologies. Further, the system also includes an interface implementing object store adapters (OSAs) that are loaded and executed by IO nodes. When a client makes a request for operations on an object store or object, the client is given alternative means of implementing the request through IO nodes. The client uses IO nodes to implement the requests using specific OSAs that have been provided. Thus, the disclosed method and system for implementing an abstract storage is an extensible solution which doesn’t require repackaging or redeploying of executables and restarting of services. The method and system enables integration of existing products with a variety of storage technologies for storing and retrieving objects.
