The invention described herein is a mobile scanner system that projects a laser beam along a tire's surface and measures the velocity of the projected dot to calculate tire tread depth. The core components of the system are a laser, two linear sensor cameras (or two photo diodes covered with grid mesh), and an enclosure with a connection to a host device, such as a mobile terminal. The proposed system requires no mechanical components and no physical contact with the tires.
