The integration of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) into the National Airspace needs UAVs to have a Detect and Avoid (DAA) capability to fly safe. The DAA system receives state and status information of surrounding traffic via ADS-B, TCAS, and ATAR (Air to Air Radar). For accurate location information, the ADS-B data is validated by either TCAS or ATAR or other active measurements. Typically, ATAR and TCAS are operated with fixed or limited detection range, thus leading to missing of target beyond the detection range or Field of Regard (FOR), also causes missed, late or degraded alerts and produces low confidence symbols on a display. The paper proposes a novel idea where the ATAR can optimize the beam shape for target validation accuracy especially for un-validated ADS-B tracks beyond standard ATAR target tracking Radar Declaration Range (RDR), FOR, and tracker capacity.
